Mr Squirrell was a member of the same gun crew as my Gt Uncle Robert Gray who was also killed on 17/9/1918. They were the only two members of the crew to be killed by a direct hit on their gun. 5 other members of the crew were wounded but survived. I shall soon be travelling to Polykastro, Greece to visit my Gt Uncle’s grave and will also pay my respects to Mr Squirrell. I would be interested to know of any of Mr Squirrell’s ancestors who may be members of your group.
Thank you James. We are pleased to add that information to the research we have carried out on Gunner Squirrell and thank you in anticipation of your trip to Greece. We hope that that all goes smoothly. Although there was a Squirrell family in the village in more recent times we do not believe that they were related to Hanshard. As far as we can tell he had three daughters and the family had moved into Ipswich by the end of the war. He is also recorded on the Ipswich War Memorial at http://www.ipswichwarmemorial.co.uk where more information can be seen.
Many thanks for the link to the Ipswich Memorial page which was most interesting. I have now returned from Greece. I have some pictures of Karasouli cemetery and Gunner Squirrell’s grave which I’d be pleased to send you.
Hello! I came across Hanshard Squirrell as I have been doing my husband’s family tree. My husband is the great grandson of Hanshard through his mother (a granddaughter). You are right Hanshard did have three daughters and they did move into Ipswich with their mother who remarried and went on to have more children. I was very interested in memories of WW1 and the circumstances of Hanshard’s death. I will certainly go and look at the Ipswich Memorial for his name. Thank you James and Kelvin.
